Helmut Newton

Trevor, I have to admit that when I first encountered Newton many years ago I recoiled in shock, even though I was attracted by Newton's visual inventiveness. The book was White Women.

From memory, the images in that book used a variety of props and body positions for Newton
to depict beautiful women engaged in rough sexual trade:
NewtonVH6.jpg The settings were variously the Villa D'Este on Lake Como in northern Italy, in or around swimming pools on the French Riviera, powerful cars and limousines, public streets and in public places, and in hotel rooms and bedrooms.

Now, many years latter, I read the images in White Women as an expose of decadent bourgeois life---fascist chic. He undermines the categories which separate commercial (fashion) from artistic photography.

As a fashion photographer in the sixties and seventies Newton took his models off the catwalk and made them the subjects of dramatic narratives. He went beyond the requirements of a commercial fashion shoot to represent women who desired whomever they liked, whenever they liked and in whatever way they liked:
NewtonVH7.jpg
That female gaze saw bodies to have and use.

Some images by Helmut Newton to ponder.

What about the science...? There is an importance to aspects of valuation the man sees in his little rear view mirror, they are an expression of the direction of commanding and commanded forces that set the rhythm to the beat of the entire symphony, a synchronising semiotic or rather methodological locus of focus: a rebirth in the great art philology! The first step is truly only one small step for mankind and one giant leap for a man. You start by recording footage of mankind, after a firm resolution in the face of some prudent cowardice - brain areas boxed off with a function, then as many factors i.e. questions asked of physiology recorded to varying depths analysed and re-laid out on a time-line, sound, video and invasive technologies: valuation of physiological meaning topping lines of real time data descending one below the other…! This data could with painstaking and protracted work put together relationships and antagonisms of the various governing systems and organs, when the former are all admitted. But the necessity of this may end up merely of methodological similarity, as I shall, at length perhaps demonstrate. But these issues afforded whichever of the three ways they go, man doesn't necessarily burp out into a land of correctly mastered relationships with quantifiable values of governing dynamics and chemical meaning: 'photon-output' (I'm thinking Popp invention refined) locations 'a-z' read x at rhythm intensity y, on type man 'z-a', heart etc. etc., serotonin metal sheen x and other things - then, after time all data correlated but much more for the purpose of query formulation on the basis of types, not 'rigorous' hypothesis. All recording, valuation and language made simpler, more comprehensively telling (kind of stats as happening instead of after in search of confirmation of something, whether you know it or not, you already know!) by astute recording layout of subtle but simple to place values that enable very deep questions to have answers dragged out of man. The beauty is that the language of process in all this will be combination of 'scientific' whys and wherefores, with a more comprehensively individual turn of virtue and weakness phraseology - kind of teachings that in a curious way is the closest mankind could get to a kind of equality, everyone would be able to understand to their degrees. Words like soul should be left to the genius of the heart or the poets: science could now clod about here with 'hard facts', spirit the in a sense most coincidental yet profound 'element' of man would take this... similar kicking. For instance, if Jahnn and Dunn of Princeton P.E.A.R had had the luck of a Gamow and Alpher ('infinitely hot big ban' indeed Stephen Hawking prey tell, how do you know what temperature it was…!) and predicted an Alain Aspect (subtracting the fact such would have been laughed at: the stupid hear of Tao they laugh, the mediocre hear it butts against a by no means inresonate block of wood, and the others…?) whilst holding to the suggestion though consciousness is distinguishable from spirit it is inseparable from it, with death or another way out… thus perhaps this consciousness is the stuff of life, so perhaps objects would, independent of 'man' show the quality perhaps he does when he unexpectedly meets an unexpectant eye. Then perhaps things may have stirred again in the time of Aspect and when Jahn and Dunn came along people would have perhaps not been so surprised when I said, spirit, is the life that itself! strikes into life! Spirit, non-different from the consciousnesses of awareness, the two combining as man's mind, not his "mind" (a weedling without spirit and sense), and though absolutely undeniable to man, inscrutable to him by means of anything other than direct experience. In other words one aspect cannot by the conditional and monkey like circuitious means grasp the essence of the universe, unless by means of spirit, in the other way the work of man. But that is no argument for the essence of the material 'out there' being this of my experience - certainly in your case gentleman I agree, but not being able to get over your own impurity is not what concerns me: but might I suggest slinging principles together in a well timed Aspect and Libett diverisfied come Jahn and Dunn paradigms. Perhaps taking the time in build-up of activity in an area of the cerebrum, likewise the very sensitive, atomic sensitivity or something machine with the apparent catalyst of the biggest manifestation as a sign of action fully operational - sprinter from the blocks: of system prejudicial accord in man and between him - and a machine, better both! Obviously the sign's of ready steady go should be rigorously refined in brightness to the eye, all tools possible with the same one subject - a universal experiment if you like is in no need of 'generalisation'. To knock on the door of a wonderland of science, just balls to see what others can't see: as an analogy and experimental condition as if to be cocky: take a Braun electric toothbrush and stand in front of your monitor, turn both on press the brush hard to your teeth and watch as the screen starts to wave in a way previously unseeable; and note that those next to you can't see what you do; note too it can work on bone close to the surface inspite of the flesh. The use for the experiment may be found in creating greater sensitivity in man machine relations at the same time as furnishing a little greater sense of reality that furnishes the confidence for provisional truths, the nature of all such 'facts'. That in this... instance it would be only provisional in the regard valuations are, new even if not from spiritual insight and mere habits of the total disposition of a physiology in relation to its circumstances. In this instance the experiment mostly draws from others that have already done the categorical refuting. And drawing it all together we could, assuming skill in affirming the answers I'm suggesting - suddenly have great pastures of knowledge perhaps only dreamed of with questions unheard of! What? Let me, brave some slander and hazard a perspective: 'the contact of the consciousness with their objects involves change in the objects themselves peculiar to the sensory modality (the 'electron' freeze perhaps?) whether they are the apparent possessor of that with which they made contact or not'. Then out of nowhere pops a question with a whole host of children: 'If such is the case then could it be so that these sense consciousnesses' might have means of relation that are not immediately evident - smells for instance (two directional... do human smells affect the health of man in what respects and extents, do other senses have objects of contact more subtle than 'gases') and perhaps spooky train action at a distance is affective by the sense of smell registering a different physiological constituent sense consciousness of spirit in a subtler way producing resonance that is merely confirmable at shallower levels of perception, such as sight hearing and valuation. Or may be it was the smell of the man, the brush of eye contact and ponderance of a very specific thought relationship that occurs in this universally noticed peculiarity - mmm… but as we claw down the depths, the quantum say, the other effects of this deeper, comprehensive stratum known in the land of the ancients as "Space" (the so-called 'zero-point', in every sense 'field' is not Spirit), is merely the "Name" of this of the Word or as Buddha Said" "Form" that all perceptions are dependent upon the 'quantum' - get it? 'level' of perhaps nearly all of sentient existence, is really a mere 'coincidence' down to the one in hand. So may be - yes, go on - the super-ordinate perceptions are dependent on the subordinate strata of perception, from the "consciousness" of "intellect" down through the senses, hearing, sight etc. to below the place that seems to be where physical 'out-there' analysis goes dark - 'matter', 'Z-mystries' 'Zero-point etc. etc. and the spooky action at distance 'between' man and objects and seemingly between and by themselves? If so could it be possible to separate, presumably with the ability to get out of things without moving (Pirsig suggests this…) from the 'in', which wherever you look what seems fundamental to your experience is never to be found in the objects of this variegated contact, the deepest of which is most difficult to pin-point, seemingly invisible as it is, spirit! Which as can see is what I was after all along, this is a parable! I'm looking with this work, not for 'scientists' but for people who can actually listen, a very rare quality hey Robert, the man who stood at the "Foot" - Sikh sense - of Mount Impossible: and at length they electrocuted him twenty-seven times for not being capable of understanding him, can you perhaps understand the slant of this hollow but deeply rooted tree?

To be read after the last comment…

An experiment. - I have no idea what will come of this batch, I write from the hip so I bid you read it all, chew it over and Nietzsche all such other truly incomparables; indulge any other highly suspecting whim over what you please, science perhaps butting together simple principle with big question and fancy mystery, or fat prejudice and every moral law rightly broken (reading here little and purposively), there are much better other men to read: Dostoyevsky, Churchill, Napolean, Montaigne, La Rochefoucauld, Goethe, for contrast Hitler and Ciano, but above all Pirsig. Of course you can purposively pursue directions stimulated by my amiable prattle, and in this I deliver like no other, freely, serious jokes aside… do you not think? Which as you do, more and more it will grow it will grow on you I swear: this! science of mine will become yours and you shall surpass all human merely too human great men, as you become a profoundly forgetful little child - the spirit will have seized hold of itself! Not so much dragged about by the body, a kind of freedom no man has any conception of for, what does midnight's voice contend? The sound of one hand clapping… as the action of deeply valued thought's repetition base and sublime slowly vanishes from memory.

Have you read the last comments...

The Camelion goes bye, bye. - Popp discovered 'photon emissions' given 'off' by the body also occur with plant life grown in the dark. Part of the process that leads to a certain luminosity, but a subtle element too… its real nature not being merely 'photon's and as the eye sees them, but sattva: the process of development is analogous to a Cyclops. In the first instance cantering along loaded up by blind research with all perils pains and Oasis's such a radical departure in thought entails. Merely guidelines leading into multi-textural increasingly satisfactory experiences, yet questions abounding not many can lead anywhere yet, there is a lot of novel 'photo-data' to squirrel away. But at length this proceeds and one develops along the cycloptic mission, questions start to tug in a nebulous fashion, various little crises occur and you suddenly 'realise' the whole process is not really to with the things 'your' thinking 'about' but the beast that is doing, changes, deep frightful changes ensue… in the methods of approach and suddenly you pop out the other side in jungle as a lion. Things are a little different now, this work is consuming your resources spirit body and soul, you have to take all sorts of increasingly difficult stances in your dealing with others and yourself to retain your focus on the answers to your ever developing questions. But in this methodologically instituted physiological mechanisms take shape in the brain and the body becomes, healthy (and supple in a little while…) you suffuse with what the old Budd Bud Ding Ding said, "rapture and joy accompanied by directed thought and evaluation" meditation… seretonin I presume, and of course Bodhidharma is right unattentively developed abdominal breathing... If your very careful you can accidentally test the rungs against each other - 'the problem of hierarchy' - so as to ignore their walls a bit like a mardy child content here as anywhere else. Behind lays the ashes of the energies of old souls, the quality of drives passions and their colourings, of the senses burnt and stored to a point in need of cooling… 'Or, my brothers, or -'

Zarathustra,
this weblog is not a science based one. The above post was about erotic photography of Helmut Newton, whether or not these images are about fetishes, or they can be better seen as phantasms.

Hence it is about art and philosophy. I'm not qualified to comment on science.

Posted by: Gary Sauer-Thompson on January 18, 2004 02:36 PM

Gary, that you are not 'qualified' to comment on science, more you treat philosophy as a way to the heights is why I placed the above parable in front of you, to which there are two other sections, thus with the utmost respect I bid you read 'The evil whisper' (@ Too Tired For Philosophy), then 'The father of not only the Physicists delusion' (@ On Nietzsche 6), then 'Jurasic Park-like closer, closer' (@ On Nietzsche 7), then 'What about the science... [emphasis on the dots...]?' (above), then 'The Camelion goes bye, bye [camel becomes the lion...]' (above), then 'An experiment' (above).

But before these, please read the other comments not using 'science' as a metaphor, they smell more readily like we Immoralists: @ 'Too Tired For Philosophy'; @ 'Interpreting Nietzsche'; @ 'On not Feeling like it'; @ 'On On Nietzsche'; @ 'Style is important'; @ 'On Nietzsche 5'.

Yours, Zarathustra.

Zarathustra,
you need to give me some time to work through your comments.

I will do so starting from those made in September.
